Lot Essay

This 'circa 1800' chair could be attributed to the workshop of Antonio Calvi, as there is a similar suite of chairs and settees ordered in 1834 for the Casa Ducale in Parma and some of the chairs are now in the Guardaroba of the Palazzo Pitti (see E. Colle, Il mobile impero in italia: arredi e decorazioni d'interni dal 1800 al 1843, Milan, 1998, no. 102). These are probably based on a design of 1831 by Giuseppe Borsato. The present 'circa 1800' chair has decorative elements that indicate it may be earlier than the Calvi suite, however, since these very similar chairs can be conclusively dated to the 1830's, the date of the present 'circa 1800' chair may also be slightly later.
