Lot Essay
The stylish à l'antique form of this console, with its incurved columnar supports and hoof feet, relates it to the work of the influential Milanese neo-classical designer Giocondo Albertolli (1743-1839), whose Ornamenti Diversi of 1782 features stools with similar incurving monopodia supports. Albertolli was himself undoubtedly influenced by the work of the celebrated à l'antique designer Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose drawing for a console with slender incurved supports relates to the table offered here (see S.E. Lawrence ed., Piranesi as Designer, exh. cat., New York, 2007, p. 312).
