Lot Essay

There appear to be only three other recorded examples of this model, two in majolica. One majolica example is illsutrated in the following three books: P. Atterbury and M. Batkin, The Dictionary of Minton, London, 1990, p. 277, pl. 53; V. Bergensen, Majolica, British, Continental and American Wares, 1851-1915, London, 1989, p. 44, fig. 31; and M. Karmason with J. Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, 2002, p. 205. The other majolica example was sold Christie's, London, 2 November 1999, lot 32 ($56,580) and the other known example, in porcelain, was sold Christie's, New York, 23 April 2004, lot 366 ($89,625).
