Lot Essay

Isaac Moillon (d. 1673) is identified as the author of a tapestry set consisting of possibly eight or ten panels depicting The Story of Achilles. Eight subjects are recorded but documents suggest that there may have been ten with the offered lot possibly representing one of the additional two subjects. The first documented mention of the series was in the inventory drawn up on the death of the Aubusson weaver Jacques de Claravaux in 1671 but numerous differing borders are recorded and thus a number of sets must have been woven.
