A PALMYRENE LIMESTONE RELIEF FOR MASHEKU
CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D.
The deceased depicted standing with his legs apart, wearing high boots and a Parthian-style long-sleeved belted tunic over trousers, with embroidered floral and geometric patterns along the hem, cuffs and down the front, embroidered beading down the front of the trousers, the fabric on the tunic and pants with shallow U-shaped folds, cascading drapery on the arms, the head with long, thin overlapping locks brushed forward, with a small mouth, a long straight nose and heavy-lidded articulated eyes, the eyebrows delineated, the ears prominent, a bunch of grapes in his lowered right hand, his left arm bent in and holding an attribute, an inscription in Palmyrene Aramaic above his left shoulder, reading: "Masheku, son of Zebeida, son of Zebeida, Alas!"
