AN ATTIC BLACK-FIGURED AMPHORA
ATTRIBUTED TO THE MANNER OF THE ANTIMENES PAINTER, CIRCA 510-500 B.C.
The obverse with a frontal quadriga, the outer horses with their heads turned out, the inner horses turned in, the charioteer standing in the box, his head in profile to the left, wearing a long chiton in added white, a goad extending diagonally to the right; the reverse with Dionysos between a satyr and a maenad, all moving to the left, the bearded satyr leading the procession, depicted nude, bearded Dionysos clad in a himation with a red border over an ankle-length chiton with a patterned border, crowned by a wreath, holding a rhyton in his right hand, vines in his left, the maenad wearing a short peplos with overfold; alternating red and black tongues above the scenes, a band of lotus bud chain encircling below, rays above the foot, palmette lotus chain on the neck, lotus bud and palmette complexes below the triple-reeded handles, details in added white and red, graffiti on the underside of the foot
