AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE VIRGINIA EXHIBITION PAINTER, CIRCA 330-300 B.C.
The obverse with two youths facing each other in added white within an Ionic naiskos, that to the left partially draped, seated on an Ionic column capital, holding a spear and a shield, and that on the right depicted nude, holding a strigil in his lowered left hand, a pointed aryballos on a string in his raised right, the podium with a band of scrolling, to the left a draped female with a tympanum in her raised left hand, a wreath hanging over her arm, a situla in her lowered right, to the right a nude youth with a thyrsos and a himation over his left arm, an ivy leaf in his lowered right, rosettes, ivy and a blossoming floral in the field, a band of tongues on the shoulders, the neck with a female bust emerging from a blossom amidst elaborate scrolling, a band of rosettes, a band of bead-and-reel, and a band of wave above, ovolo on the rim; the reverse with a profile female head on the body, a three-tiered blossom and rosettes to the left, ivy and a floral sprig to the right, a band of stopt meander encircling below, a band of tongues on the shoulders, a winged profile female head framed by tendrils on the neck, a band of laurel centered by a rosette, a wavy line, and a band of wave above, ovolo on the rim, palmettes below the handles, molded duck heads on the shoulders framing the handles, the volutes with molded gorgon heads in added white, framed by scrolling on the obverse; details in added white, yellow and red
