AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED AMPHORA
ATTRIBUTED TO THE VIRGINIA EXHIBITION PAINTER, CIRCA 330-300 B.C.
The obverse with a standing draped female, a nude youth and winged Eros within an Ionic naiskos, the female holding a swan aloft above Eros who reaches up toward it, an ivy leaf in her lowered right hand, Eros in added white, holding a wreath in his left, the youth pointing toward the swan with his right hand, a thyrsos and a himation in his left arm, a sprouting flower behind, the podium with a band of concentric squares, rosettes and ivy in the field on either side, a band of tongues on the shoulders, a female bust emerging from a blossom amidst elaborate scrolling above, the neck with rays, a band of bead-and-reel and a palmette, ivy vine encircling the mouth; the reverse with a filleted stele flanked by two-tiered blossoms, the podium with palmettes; a band of wave encircling below, a band of laurel centered by a rosette on the shoulders, long tongues above, the neck with a palmette above a wavy line, palmettes below the handles; details in added white, yellow and red
