AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED LOUTROPHOROS
ATTRIBUTED TO THE BALTIMORE PAINTER, CIRCA 340-320 B.C.
The obverse with a draped woman in added white within an Ionic naiskos, a band of battlements on the podium, seated on a stool with her feet resting upon a footstool, holding a wreath in her lowered left hand, a larnax and a ball of wool in her extended right, a himation in added red over her long chiton, a fillet hanging behind, flanked by two standing draped females, each holding a mirror before her, that to the left holding a situla, that to the right with an oinochoe, the shoulders with a profile female head in added white emerging from a blossom amidst elaborate scrolling; the reverse with two draped females flanking a filleted stele, the podium with scrolling, the female to the left holding a mirror and a fillet, that to the right holding a situla and a fillet, a profile head wearing a stephane between upraised wings on the shoulders, a band of meander encircling below; dotted ovolo along the shoulders, the neck bisected by a raised fillet, palmettes above, rays and a band of rosettes below, laurel below the rim, ovolo on the exterior of the rim, palmettes at the sides, details in added white, yellow and red
