Lot Essay

From the window of the flat in Rome appears on the list of works compiled by Polenov himself under number 404. It was painted during the artist's stay in Rome from May 1894 until May 1896 and depicts a view from the artist's apartment of the Medici Villa. Another view of this villa from the same period was exhibited at the XXV Peredvizhniki [Itinerant] Exhibition in 1897 in St Petersburg and in Moscow (View of the Medici Villa, no. 424, 1896, private collection).

We are grateful to Dr Eleonora Paston of the State Tretyakov Gallery for her assistance in cataloguing the present lot.
