The Antinori family: Tignanello, Solaia, and Cervaro della Sala
The Antinori family of Tuscany traces its roots to 13th Century Florence, where they began to sell wines in 1385. For the past 26 generations and still today this noble family has been synonymous with Tuscany in the minds of many wine lovers.
Tignanello is a historic property in the Chianti Classico region whose ownership has passed through many aristocratic Tuscan families since the Renaissance, coming into the hands of the Antinori family in the mid-19th Century. In 1970 Piero Antinori produced a Chianti Classico Riserva from the Tignanello vineyard. In 1971 it was made without the Chianti name, and by 1975, it was made without the then compulsory use of white grapes, and with the addition of Cabernet Sauvignon - this was the birth of the SuperTuscan wine.
In 1978, Antinori acquired the Solaia vineyard next to Tignanello, and began to produce a wine blended from 80 Cabernet Sauvignon and 20 Cabernet Franc, eventually adding Sangiovese to the list. Today this estate covers 350 ha, with 147 of them planted to vines.
Cervaro della Sala is a white wine produced by Antinori in Umbria from a blend of 85 Chardonnay and 15 Grechetto - a sort of "white SuperTuscan". The soils are limestone and marl - similar to Burgundy - and the varieties are vinified separately prior to fermentation and aging in French oak casks. The wine has been a reference standard in the region since 1985.
