Biondi-Santi Tenuta "Il Greppo"
One of the most renowned estates in Italy, Biondi-Santi "Tenuta Il Greppo" traces its roots to Clemente Santi, the owner of the property in the mid-18th Century who is known to have isolated the Brunello clone of Sangiovese in 1865. It is this particularly refined variation of Sangiovese that is responsible for the fame of the entire district of Montalcino, since prior to this time, the region was known for the production of Moscatello.

Today Tenuta Il Greppo is overseen by Franco Biondi-Santi, great grandson of Clemente, and a continuing beacon of quality in Montalcino. The estate is today 150 hectares in total, with 25 used for wine production and 22 ha planted to the special selection of Brunello known as BBS-11 for Brunello Biondi Santi. The wines are fermented using wild yeasts and a very gentle extraction. The Rosso and Annata are fermented in concrete, while the Riserva is fermented in oak fermenters. The wines are matured in (very) old botti, with the Riservas aged in the oldest ones on the estate. Two of these date to 1930, and two to 1880. Mr. Biondi Santi emphasized his devotion to the purity of the fruit from this site, and explained that he wants the wines to be matured in wood for the exposure to oxygen that this provides, but that he wants this to be the most neutral possible container for the wine.
