Domaine Clarence Dillon and Château Haut-Brion
Château Haut-Brion has been highly regarded for many centuries, being mentioned in Samuel Pepy's diary in 1663. In 1935 this historic property was bought by the American financier, Clarence Dillon, whose descendants still own the estate today. Mr. Dillon's granddaughter Joan Dillon is the President and her son, His Royal Highness Prince Robert of Luxembourg, is the Vice President and Managing Director. Domaine Clarence Dillon is proprietor as well of Château La Mission Haut-Brion.
It is thanks to the generosity of Prince Robert that we are able to offer today's extraordinary consignment, which consists of two consoles designed by himself and Linley of London to hold precious wines released directly from the Château. These consoles are number three of the 15 that were crafted for the red wines and number two of 5 that were crafted for the white wines. The two No. 1s are retained at Château Haut-Brion.
The red console has been made out of the most precious woods, including American walnut, satinwood, Indian ebony stringing, Santos rosewood and Macassa ebony, while the white console is crafted from English oak, Burr ash, Macassa ebony, Indian ebony and satinwood. They both hold some of the finest wines ever produced at Château Haut-Brion. These rare bottles have never left the Estate's cellar and for some of them represent the very last existing bottles at Haut-Brion. Of particular note is the fact that the last eight bottles of '45 remaining at the château will go into these consoles, according to Prince Robert, who calls the 1945 "undoubtedly the finest Château Haut-Brion that I have ever tasted".
Hidden within secret drawers, one will find some very fine silverware created and engraved by the renowned Italian silversmith and jewellery designer, Buccellati. The auction lot also comprises a beautiful wooden box containing two "Ch?teau Haut-Brion-design" carafes and 12 glasses finely engraved with the logos of Domaine Clarence Dillon and Château Haut-Brion.
The lucky buyers of these lots will also receive, a pledge for 6 bottles of Château Haut-Brion Rouge 2010 (for the purchaser of the red console) and 6 bottles of Château Haut-Brion Blanc 2010 (for the purchaser of the white console), which will be shipped from the Château when they have been bottled in the autumn of 2012. All of the wines for the lot are presently lying at the Ch?teau and will be shipped upon purchase of this lot.
The proceeds of this lot will go to benefit the Children's Medical Foundation (CMF), a Hong-Kong based charitable organization seeking to save the lives of children in Asia by improving access to quality health care. Founded in 1996 (formerly known as Project HOPE HK), CMF has a 15 year history of funding and implementing sustainable, high impact health care programs in China. Currently, CMF is focussed on improving the healthcare available for newborn babies in rural, poor regions in China, where tens of thousands of babies die every year in the first month of their life from entirely preventable reasons. Working in partnership with grassroots health care partners, CMF's programs provide training for rural doctors and nurses, equipment, and desperately needed funding for families who cannot afford lifesaving treatment for their children. CMF's programs have directly impacted tens of thousands of families in the past decade and a half.
