St.-Estèphe
St.-Estèphe has long had a reputation for producing a wine with firm tannins and a somewhat rustic edge. This is due to vineyards being planted with a high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in heavier soils with a high clay content. Today, the standard is high, and the best wines are produced in the south-eastern portion of the commune, just on the other side of the little stream called the Jalle de Breuil from Château Lafite. Lafite, in fact, has a very small plot of vines in the commune of St.-Estèphe, in spite of the fact that the wine is classified as Pauillac. The soil and subsoil are similar to what is found in Pauillac: gravel over a limestone and sandstone rich in iron, called alios. This helps the grapes to ripen well, and provides them with the micronutrients that help develop complexity and power. The superstars here are definitely Cos d'Estournel and Montrose, and this is where our collection is focused.
