Margaux
Margaux is the southernmost of the commune appellations in the Médoc as well as the largest. The commune's eponymous château is its only first growth, and is considered to be not only the finest Margaux, but one of the best wines produced anywhere in the world. The château itself is located on the eastern edge of the village, near the river, and it is due to this favorable location that it owes its dominance. Much of the vineyard land is located here as well, although there are parcels to the north and west of the village as well. Located very close to Margaux and sharing in its glory at the top of the Margaux appellation is Château Palmer, located just to the south of Margaux in the village of Cantenac. That it is classified as a third growth is an accident of history, for in the right years, Palmer can contend as the wine of the vintage.
Château Palmer--Vintage 2005
Cantenac (Margaux), 3me cru classé. Château-bottled
Both lots in original wooden cases
This spectacular offering should continue to improve, and may merit an even higher score after additional ageing. Stunningly rich and powerful, the dark purple-tinged 2005 Palmer is a blend of 53 Cabernet Sauvignon, 40 Merlot, and 7 Petit Verdot. Aromas of incense, burning embers, blackcurrants, plums, liquorice, and flowers are followed by a full-bodied Margaux with more weight and power even than its nearby first-growth rival, Ch?teau Margaux. The abundant acidity and tannins are beautifully coated by the wine's exceptional fruit extract and overall harmony and richness. It is so concentrated that one is hard pressed to find even a hint of new oak. Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 176, April 2008
