Pessac-Léognan
The city of Bordeaux is much older than the peninsula jutting northwards into the Atlantic. Long centuries before the swamps of the Médoc were drained there was a thriving trade in wines produced in the city itself and to the south, an area that today we call the Graves. Since 1984, the historic vineyards that for the core of the Graves have taken the appellation Pessac-Léognan, named after two of the principal villages here.
The oldest property still extant in this appellation is Pape-Clément in Pessac, first planted in the thirteenth century. The vineyard was given to the cleric Bertrand de Goth upon his appointment as Archbishop of Bordeaux in 1299. Five years after his appointment to Bordeaux, Bertrand was made pope by the College of Cardinals, taking the name Clement V. Today, his vineyard lies in the heart of the suburbs of Bordeaux, along with Haut-Brion.
Château Haut-Brion is the most exalted producer in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. Incongruously sited today in the middle of typical French urban sprawl, Haut-Brion is contiguous with La Mission Haut-Brion and La Tour Haut-Brion, although lie across the street and thus just over the border in the commune of Talence. These remnants form perhaps the most exceptional urban vineyard in the world.
