Reinagle studied under his father, the painter Ramsay Richard Reinagle, R.A. (1775-1862) and was particularly influenced by Dutch maritime artists such as the van de Veldes and Ludolf Backhuysen. He submitted a number of maritime paintings to the Royal Academy from 1824 and is perhaps best known for his depictions of the Battle of Navarino in the Ionian Sea (20th October 1827). This significant event in naval history is often described as the last major battle to be fought entirely with sailing ships, and was a victory for the combined British, French and Russian naval force against the Ottoman navy.
Reinagle worked in both oil and watercolour and showed much potential as a painter of maritime subjects, however sadly he died in London on 6th December 1835 at the age of only 33.
