Originally launched in 1912 as Gaviotta, Duet was designed by Linton Hope and built at White's Yard on the River Itchen in Hampshire, measuring 72 feet in length with an 11 foot beam. In the 1930s she was bought by the explorer Augustine Cortauld who renamed her Duet. After his death in 1959 she passed into the ownership of his son, the Rev. Christopher Cortauld, who with Mr. Christopher Ellis formed The Ocean Youth Club.
