Further details
Zhang Daqian had a special affinity for gardens, regarding its aesthetic and overall alignment with nature. Having lived in Suzhou's Master of the Nets Garden, he developed a sensitivity to the arrangement and layout of Chinese gardens, creating his own Garden of Eden in Brazil, the Garden of Eight Virtues.
In order to create the garden, Zhang employed many workers, in particular a Japanese horticulturalist, Mr. Suzuki, to decide on the placement of trees, lakes and thatched huts. Through observing the works of Mr. Suzuki, Zhang understood the Japanese methods of gardening. This knowledge, coupled with Zhang's natural love for plants, could be seen in all of Zhang's abodes, which were often filled with plants. Zhang had a particular affinity for plum blossoms and pine, for they both represent purity and tenacity, and were popular subjects for his paintings.
This present piece portrays a section of a pine, exalted for its distinctiveness and firmness, and was dedicated to Li Hanxiang and Madam Cuiying. Li Hanxiang (1926-1996) was a noted film director who produced films in Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, and received accolades from the Asian Film Festival and the Golden Horse Awards.
