An American Collection Lots 205-222 represent a fine and rare collection of American horology. American watchmaking is intimately tied to the industrialization and history of the nation. Waltham, Elgin and E. Howard grew alongside manufacturers like Henry Ford, James W. Packard and Bethlehem Steel. The drive to create quality mass produced timepieces began in the mid-19th century and by the time of its decline in the 1930's over 9 million watches had been produced. The lots included in this collection move beyond gold-filled time only watches to works of art with unusual dials such as lot 213 with the rare red enamel dial or lot 216 with enamel State of Texas dial. One of the rarest watches is lot 220, a gold Waltham with Turkish market dial. The collection is complimented by several complicated timepieces, lot 214 an E. Howard openface Jump Hour watch with tourbillon conversion by Keith Hazelton. Lot 222 is a fine example of early American technology and experimentation with timing watches. This silver Appleton, Tracy chronodrometer watch has jumping 1/4th seconds and central four minute revolving hand.
