Gilt-finished lever movement with transitional winding, later bi-metallic compensation balance, minute repeating on two gongs activated by a pull-push twist button in the band, gold cuvette, scroll engraved gold dial, outer engine-turned chapter ring with Roman numerals, three subsidiary dials for day and date, constant seconds, fan-form aperture for phases of the moon and lunar calendar, large circular case with finely engraved scroll and foliage decoration, reverse centered by engraved coat-of-arms and a monogram, case and cuvette stamped with casemaker's initials LC for Louis Comtesse and London date letter for 1836, dial and movement signed

Charles Edward Viner - London, 1788-1879. A watch, clock and chronometer maker, he was the apprentice to Thomas Savage. He became a member of the Clockmakers Company in 1813 and was a Liveryman between 1819 and 1840. He has several known addresses: 23 Regent Street, 1 Royal Exchange and a retail outlet at 151 New Bond Street. He is credited with improving the Berollas chain system.
