Lot Essay

We are grateful to Timothy Wilcox for suggesting a date of the late 1830s for the present watercolour. Turner first exhibited a view of Kent in 1836, Dover Castle. He subsequently exhibited View from the Dover Road near Gillingham, Kent, Sheerness and the junction of the Thames and the Medway in the distance in 1842, and the same title again in 1845.
