Lot Essay

The female herm heading the legs on the present gueridons derives from the model used by the celebrated ébéniste Adam Weisweiler on the uprights of many of his secrétaires and legs of the centre table delivered by Daguerre in 1784 for Marie-Antoinette (M. Segoura, Weisweiler, Paris, 1983, pp.29, 68, 109 and 127 for the secrétaires and p.42 for the centre table).

A related pair of gueridons featuring virtually identical female herms was sold, 'Four British Collections including Important Furniture', Christie's, London, 5 June 2008, lot 54 (£37,250 including premium) while a further related pair was sold more recently, 'Monsieur and Madame Francois: A Lifetime of Collecting', Christie's, London, 9 June 2011, lot 127 (£21,250 including premium).
