In a later parcel-gilt wood frame inscribed at the bottom 'LA Annonciation', the reverse inscribed 'Collection Gillot. XIVme Siecle' and with paper label inscribed in brown ink 'MA 425'

The present relief was attributed by Jaap Leeuwenberg to an anonymous sculptor whom he dubbed the Master of the Agrafe Forgeries (J. Leeuwenberg, 'Early Nineteenth-Century Gothic Ivories' in Aachener Kunstblatter, 39/1969, Dusseldorf, pp. 111-148). Although he argues for a dating to the late 18th or very early 19th century for the group, some scholars still contend that the ivories are genuine products of the gothic era.
