Lot Essay

The composition of the present painting is similar to that of an oil sketch by Martino Altomonte, dated 1742, in the Augustiner-Chorherrenstift, Saint Florian, which is thought to be a study for a never executed wall painting by Martino Altomonte in the Sommerrefektorium of Stift Heiligenkreuz, Austria (see: H. Etzlsdorfer, 'Martino und Bartolomeo Altomonte', in: Schriften des Salzburger Barockmuseums, vol. 27, no. 24.).
