Lot Essay

D S Howard writes that "there is no indication as to who ordered this unusual service" (Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol II, p 614), which commemorates the political agreement among the three nations engineered by William Pitt in 1788, an alliance designed both to limit France's power and to keep Spain's ambitions in check.
