Lot Essay

Only a very few pieces of this rare Fitzhugh colorway are recorded or have appeared on the market. The Griffith collection included a dish cover and a butter tub and E Gordon illustrates a hot water dish (op cit, color pl IX), all presumably from the same service as the present lot. A teapot illustrated by J Mudge (op cit, p 212) and a pair of plates sold Sotheby's, New York, 23 October 1981, lot 71 were monogrammed ASC and attributed by Mudge to a Bristol, Rhode Island family.
