Lot Essay

This unusual subject seems to be unrecorded and its source unknown; its flag appears to be the King's Colors or Ensign Armorial as used in the 18th century for both military and merchant ships. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain, no 152, illustrates a similar caddy with a maritime scene showing the Dutch flag and inscribed DOGGERS BANK, that caddy commemorating the 1781 Dutch vs English naval battle near Doggersbank in the North Sea.
