Lot Essay
A plate with this decoration, certainly one of the earliest European maritime subjects, was in the Mottahedeh Collection and published by Howard & Ayers (op cit, vol I, p 218), who suggest that it may represent shipping on the Pearl River. A teabowl and saucer in the Khalil Rizk Collection was sold Sotheby's, New York, 25 April 2008, lot 190.
