A CHARLES IV PROCLAMATION CHARGER
THE CHARLES IV PROCLAMATION SERVICES In December 1788 Charles IV, son of Charles III and Maria Amalia of Saxony, was proclaimed as King of Spain. On this occasion a number of institutions - city governments, Universities, guilds - commissioned medals, each decorated on one side with a portrait bust of the new King and distributed to distinguished recipients in celebration. On the medals' reverse were the arms or insignia of the commissioning institution, some designed by the engraver Geronimo Antonio Gil. Chinese export porcelain services were commissioned based on seven of these medals, each faithfully rendering the details of the original in famille rose enamel colors. For a very complete history of the medals and these services see A Diez de Rivera, Proclamation Medals and Related Chinese Export Services in the Reign of Charles IV of Spain, Oriental Art, vol LV no3, 2005-6, and R Diaz, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for Spain, pp 309-339.
