Lot Essay

Johan Lodewijk Gregory (1731-1803) and Johanna Gerard Tack (1741-1812) married in 1766; Kroes (op cit, pp 399-400) believes this service was created for their silver anniversary in 1791, and that the unusual design elements are marriage symbols. Gregory, an Amsterdam merchant, was appointed to the lucrative post of consul for Prussia in 1789.
