Lot Essay

The Antients Grand Lodge was founded in 1751 at Turk's Head Tavern in Soho as a rival to the Premier Grand Lodge of England, which the "Antients" or "Ancients" called the "Moderns". The 3rd and 4th Dukes of Atholl served as Grand Masters for its primarily Irish members, also the 6th Earl of Antrim. In 1813 the two rivals merged.
