Lot Essay

A similar chip-carved box, with heart cut-out, compass-star inlay and sliding lid was made by an American prisoner of war in Mill Prison, Devon, England in 1777. With a similar design, the box offered here was probably made around the same time in either England or America. See Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, 18-19 August 2007.
