Combed ridges of oil glide in continuous motion over this dynamic work by Jason Martin. Influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Minimalism, as well as Eastern calligraphy, the artist applies a thick skin of pigment to the 'canvas' of aluminium with a broad brush. The choice of support is significant as each material affects the movement of the paint differently. The interaction between ambient light and the modulated surface produces a spectrum of colours, introducing an element of three-dimensionality to this monochrome painting.
