Lot Essay
We are grateful to Paul Taylor of the Warburg Institute for noting that the subject of a forest swallowed up by the Great Flood occurs in other sources of the first quarter of the seventeenth century, for example in compositions by Peter van Halen (Stuttgart) and Abraham Bloemaert (Yale University Art Gallery and Lugt collection). The composition takes inspiration from prints by Antonio Tempesta of both the Biblical and mythological floods (Bartsch, XVII, 35, p. 18, no. 27 (128)*, and 36, p. 13, no. 644 (151)).
