The front and back gilt with the inscription To Daniel McDonald above a pair of hands clasped in friendship and a banner reading AULD LAND SINE, the rim with three further clasped hands and ribbon-tied vine incorporating thistle, roses, and shamrocks, hunt scenes below, the interior with views of court figures writing poems, playing music and relaxing on terraces

A very similar bowl from the collection of Alma Porter is featured on the cover of J Q Feller's The Canton Famille Rose Porcelains. In the Porter example the hands appear above the motto, rather than within the border, and there is no dedication, just the word For. and a hunting horn snuff mull, as there is on a plate illustrated by Howard (op cit, vol. II, p. 681). All share the rose, thistle and clover border emblematic of England, Scotland and Ireland; Howard suggests that these porcelains may be associated with an American Scottish Society.
