Lot Essay

Steinberg acquired this drawing as a work by the 17th-century Florentine artist Giovanni da San Giovanni, but the red chalk underdrawing and flourishing pen strokes seem characteristic of the work of the 18th-century Bolognese artist Antonio Gionima.
