Lot Essay

Bloemaert painted a similar composition dated 1630, albeit with a slightly more idealized interpretation of the young woman, suggesting perhaps that the woman in the painting represents an allegory of smell, spring or youth (see M. Roethlisberger, Abraham Bloemaert and his sons, Doornspijk, 1993, I, p. 312, no. 484; II, fig. 666).
