Lot Essay

A study for the figure of Jael in Jael and Sisera in the Accademia de San Luca, Rome. Two other studies, both including motifs from the finished painting are in the Acxademia de San Fernando, Madrid (La Real Academia di San Fernando, exhib. cat., Madrid, 1965, no. 40).
Another figure in this same pose appears in a mosaic lunette completed by Maratti in 1680s for the Cappella della Presentazione in the Vatican.
