Lot Essay

The French-born Goupy worked in Rome before arriving in England in 1711 where he met Marco Ricci. Ricci would teach Goupy the art of bodycolor. With that skill, as well as his talents as an etcher and printmaker Goupy embarked on a very successful career as a copyist of Italian Old Masters, made expressly for the English market.
The Dream of Jacob is after a painting by Salvator Rosa that was, and remains in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire at Chatsworth. Rosa's Tobias and the Angels, was in the possession of Sir Paul Metheun at Corsham Court when Goupy first copied it in 1717.
