The present study relates to the history painting of the same subject from The Odyssey that Kauffman exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1773. At the court of Sparta, Menelaus speaks of the suffering endured by Odysseus, causing Telemachus to weep for his lost father. On the right, Helen of Troy recognizes and identifies the young man as Odysseus' son.
