Timothy Pont attended St. Leonard's College, St. Andrews. In the late 16th century, Pont succeeded in creating the first atlas of Scotland. He travelled to the remotest areas of the country in order to complete his project. His maps record over 20,000 named places and are the earliest source of this information. They were published posthumously by John Bleau in Amsterdam in 1654.
