the first signed, inscribed and dated 'The queen had this sketch in her hands often/It is the original one for Prince Alfred/1864 KML' (upper centre) and further inscribed 'This is the one Mr Macleay with all respect/and deference wd suggest as the best' (lower centre) and numbered 'No. 1' (lower right); the second numbered 'No. 3' (lower right)
