Lot Essay
This work was completed in 1871 when Auguste Rodin was a pupil in Carrier-Belleuse's Brussels studio. Rodin is recorded to have modeled statues signed 'Carrier-Belleuse' for the Belgian manufacturers and Innocence is generally accepted as representing a collaboration between the artists.
Rodin would later reapply various elements of Innocence in other works, such as the putti in Toilette de Venus, or the resuscitation of the Innocence's face in numerous heads of Bacchantes such as the famous Suzon.
A terracotta version sold Christie's, New York, 7 May 2008, lot 329 ($85,000).
