This lot compares closely to cabinets stamped by the ébéniste Mathieu Befort, dit Befort Jeune. Two comparable meubles d'appui by Befort, each of Louis XVI style in ebony veneer and sharing the same frieze and side-panel ormolu mounts, have appeared at auction. One was offered Christie's, London, 27 September 2007, lot 157 and another sold A Private Collection Volume II, Sotheby's, New York, 19 April 2007, lot 180 ($72,000).

Christofle is distinguished for producing fine quality pieces, predominantly table-wares, large scale centrepieces and candelabra in electroplate, solid silver and gilt-bronze, notably for Emperor Napoleon III. Although it is rare to find their stamp on a gilt-bronze furniture mount it shows the range and breadth of their output. The Art Journal Catalogue of the 1878 Paris International Exhibition illustrates two bas-relief furniture mounts of the type.
