Lot Essay

This vase relates closely to an enamel cartel clock attributed to Escalier de Cristal and made for the Japanese parlour of William H. Vanderbilt's mansion at 640 Fifth Avenue, New York (now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago).

A related vase of identical outshape and scale but with differing enamels and fronted by a clock dial was offered Christie's, London, 1 November 2001, lot 279. A pair of vases of the model but with porcelian bodies sold Sotheby's, New York, 14 April 2008, lot 187 ($97,000).
