The motto 'Recte et Constanter' belongs to the Austrian Braun family. We are grateful to Jan van Helmont for the alternative suggestion that the sitter may have been a liveried court officer whose ancestors had been in the service of the Dowager Empress Amalia Wilhelmina of Austria (1673-1742), née von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, widow of Emperor Joseph I; the Dowager Empress also used this motto.
