The present obelisk was almost certainly a 'souvenir' made to commemorate the placement of the Luxor Obelisk by Louis Phillipe in the Place de la Concorde, Paris, in 1836. The obelisk, originally located flanking the entrance to Luxor temple, Egypt, was a gift from the then self-proclaimed Khedive of Egypt, Muhammad Ali Pasha, to the French Government in 1829.
