A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
School of Ogawa Haritsu, Edo period (18th-19th century), with inlaid ceramic seals Kan and Naoyuki
The rectangular, slightly domed box with rounded corners and fitted lid decorated in gold hiramaki-e, pewter, silver and multicolored ceramic with a gold-lacquer willow above a kingfisher perched on a stake by bamboo baskets holding stones, the underside of the box set on four short bracket feet, the underside of the lid decorated with snow crystals in ceramic on a matte gold reserve in the shape of a large snow crystal and inscribed yuki ya tama menko fuhai (Snow and jewels: perfectly beautiful), the characters of which inlaid with silver on a black ground, fitted with a tray, a slate inkstone with fundame rim and a metal waterdropper (suiteki), rims pewter, seals on base
