An inlaid export-lacquer chest
Momoyama period (17th century)
Of rectangular form with hinged drop-front and fitted with eleven interior drawers, the face panel of each drawer decorated in gold and brownish silver lacquer with foliage with black-line details and random blossoms inlaid in mother-of-pearl within foliate scroll borders, all on a black-lacquer ground, the interior of the drawers black lacquer; the sides decorated with cranes under a fruiting tree and sparrows amongst maple and camellias surrounded by geometric borders; with metal lock surrounded by a carved wood foliate embellishment, two metal side loop handles and metal drawer pulls
